On the outside, Mayr seems to have it all a successful career as Head of the Guard for a prominent politician, family and friends who adore him, and the attention of beautiful women. But appearances are a good way to bury secrets, including the fact that while Mayr is a romantic at heart, searching for the one person to share his life with, his lovers keep leaving him. When his last girlfriend takes him back and suggests an intimate night with Tash, one of her lovers, Mayr reluctantly agrees. The last thing he expects is to fall hard for Tash, who is nothing like Mayr's previous lovers—and about to undertake the Uldana Trials. If Tash fails, he'll likely die. If he succeeds, he must give up Mayr, and become the latest to leave Mayr standing alone with a broken heart.

Four The Republic Volume 2 Archer Kay Leah Books

If you are the kind of person that need to have information and no holes in your knowledge. I heavily advise that you read book one, A Question of Counsel, of this series. I love to have all the pieces to my puzzle before me. Or I could just get more confused. So after reading approximately three chapters, I put Four down and sought out A Question of Counsel. There I got answers, details, insight. Once finished I was able to proceed forward with a brighter view of what I was reading. Then heading back to the beginning of Four. I started it all over again and this time I read with understanding. I have to say that by the end of A Question of Counsel, I very much wanted more of Mayr.

Now, Mayr has center stage. It was not easy. He has had life handed to him hard and fast. He wants what most want out of life someone to love, to care, to stay and return his love. That chance has presented itself after yet another lover leaves him. But this time his new lover may have no choice in the matter. I found this one more intriguing and with a bit more depth than book one. I got a bit more of the world around Mayr. The life that he was leading. Things just was more. Tash was interesting, determined, and a challenge.

This read catered more to Mayr and how things were around him. I enjoyed the direction things were heading, but the pace was a bit slow for me. I was desiring a more uptempo pace. The sex scenes were intense, but not offensive. The flashes of Tash was rough, tough, but complaint. I know odd paring. I found him to be the one hot, sexy, desirable, but at the same time something about him was a bit off limits.

I was able to only keep up and follow through on things because I took the time to go back and read book one. There were areas for improvement, ie. character depth, interaction, plot line depth (felt a bit superficial), world development should have grown more since the first book. I enjoye this mm romance. It was soft.

Four The Republic Volume 2 Archer Kay Leah Books Reviews

REVIEW
This is book two in The Republic Series, but can be read as a standalone. This story is obviously set in the same world as book one, but a completely different couple complete with HEA. This book centers on Mayr the Head of the Guard for a prominent family. Mayr is lovely man, handsome, loyal, but has been very badly treated by his previous Partners. He comes from a close nit family, all he ever wanted was someone to love and complete him.
" The truth is that nothing worth having is ever easy, and all the best things in life are the result of pain. In the end, that's what makes the good things go very great, and that's what makes it all worth the struggle."
I think that describes this beautiful love story. At its heart is about finding that one person that completes you. Mayr meets Tash through one of his exes who he meets for a threesome. Tash is a priest, who is getting ready to become an Uldana Priest which unfortunately will mean he will be unable to have close sexual relationship with anyone.
Even though they decide to keep everything casual, which would be okay if only both men didn’t feel this strong connection neither one expected. I not saying anymore except it pulled on my heartstrings. I have read this authors work before and he knows how to pull you into the different worlds he creates and spits me out after I have been put through emotional ringer. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a beautiful but heartbreaking love story in a fantasy setting.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Let’s start with a small rant. Four is the second book in the series and I should have listened to that. Despite being mildly interested in book one, I decided book two sounded way more promising and I went straight for it. The result was A LOT of confusion on my part, regarding the world I had been tossed into and the relationship level between characters. For N reasons, I believed this was a companion series – standalones that connect each other with the barest of links, but not to the point of making a linear reading necessary. For those of you that got the same impression, don’t fall for this The Republic is a linear series and you need to read book one to know what’s happening in book two!! Just changing the protagonists doesn’t turn a book into a standalone. #justsaying

Now that this is off our way, for the good parts I enjoyed Four. It was a very unique book, beautifully written, with relatable and sexy characters. However, the world building could have used more attention and detail, especially in the beginning of the book. Even if I had read the first book in the series, it’s always good to remind the reader where we are, as we usually read a ton of books in the breaks of waiting for the next volume of the series. Also, the pace was so slow! I suffer from reader’s anxiety when the book starts to get nowhere after a X number of pages/chapters (varies from a book to another), I get impatient, grumpy and desperate for relevant events on the story. It sucks hard, because then you can’t enjoy all the little good things along the plot and it was precisely the case with Four =(

I’m a sucker for gay romance, tattooed guys and informal romantic relationships that get out of hands on my books, so Four made it to three stars an enjoyable ride that had tons of potential to be the best of my life and it wasn’t.
